I created this embroidered watercolor as part of my artist residency at the Rogue River Ranch for the Bureau of Land Management. While there I learned a lot about the different groups of people who had called the land home. I kept thinking of their stories, how their lives overlapped, and how they were all gone but had once been connected to that same spot. I like to think there are still traces of them there that the land remembers, even if human history has forgotten.
To visualize this idea I stitched silhouettes of many different people who had lived along the Rogue, using historical photos as inspiration. There are men and women from various indigenous tribes, gold miners, settlers, Chinese immigrants, mountain men, and outdoor explorers. I stitched with white thread and then painted over it (the last picture and video show this process). The paint traveled along the thread, dyeing it the color of the landscape, giving the appearance that the people have become one with the land.
