Some paintings flow easily and quickly, while others put up more of a fight. This one was difficult from start to finish, even including picking its name. I considered calling it "Moving On," "Moving Through," "Transition," "Transformation," "Taking Flight," "Sitting with Uncertainty," "Facing the Unknown," or "Remembering Caroline." They all touched on some part of the complicated feelings that I felt while creating this piece, which was painted in memory of my friend who recently died unexpectedly, leaving behind her young family and a community of people whose lives she touched. As a person of faith, I believe that God will make everything work out for our good, but it is very hard to see how sometimes. I like things to make sense and I like things to be fair. But life, and death, doesn't really work like that. And so we muddle on. We hold our loved ones a little closer. We wrestle with difficult questions, and we pray and remember, and hope.
